National Truck Driver Appreciation Week is a time set for us to take the time to thank all professional truck drivers for their hard work and commitment. Truck drivers keep our economy alive and provide us with the necessary everyday resources. During this week, we must honor and thank these individuals for their commitment to undertaking one of our economy's most demanding and critical jobs.

This week in September is a small way to show appreciation to the 3.5 million professional men and women who deliver our goods safely, securely, and on time while keeping our highways safe. Start planning to do something special for your drivers this week in September!

Driver Recognition Awards

Driver Appreciation Week is an excellent time to review the award and recognition programs that you have in place. Recognizing drivers who are performing their jobs safely and competently is crucial. Recognition can boost company morale and encourage others to perform at a higher standard.

As a motor carrier, you can enroll your drivers in several state and Nationwide Association award programs. Contact your state trucking association for a listing of the available awards programs. Various awards programs are available for your drivers through organizations such as the American Trucking Association (www.truckline.com) and the National Private Truck Council (NPTC). The NPTC has the Driver Hall of Fame and National Driver All-Stars driver's awards programs available to NPTC members. Go to www.nptc.org to enroll your driver.

Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over Enforcement Crackdown is Now in Place!

The 2023 national enforcement mobilization "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" took effect nationwide on August 16 and will conclude on September 4, 2023. One of the deadliest and most often committed – yet preventable – crimes (impaired driving) has become a serious safety epidemic in our country.

With Labor Day Weekend approaching, many individuals take their last trips of the summer. This holiday increases road traffic, with many individuals taking road trips to nearby destinations. Increased traffic means an increased likelihood of vehicle crashes, and the festive nature of the weekend, unfortunately, lends itself to instances of drunk driving. To keep people safe on the streets, the U.S. Department of Transportation's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) wants to make sure this busy travel period is a safe one, which is why we're partnering with law enforcement nationwide for the Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over enforcement campaign from August 16 through September 4, 2023, to help put a stop to alcohol-impaired driving.

Have you prepared your terminal facility for the upcoming Labor Day weekend?

Thieves use the holiday weekend as an opportunity to target terminals. Take extra precautions to secure your facility's trucks and items of value. If your units do not have anti-siphon devices or locking caps, instruct the drivers not to fill the units at the end of the day. Make sure that all security alarms are in working order. Walk the lot's perimeter to ensure that security fencing is in good condition. Move units and all other materials, such as pallets, tires, etc., far enough away from the fence so they cannot be used to climb on to get over the fence. Consider blocking the entrance and exits to the lot so units cannot be stolen. Throughout the three-day weekend, assign management personnel to check the terminal randomly. Using some prevention and common sense can deter a thief from striking your facility.
